‘Spreading the WCB word’

Atlanta Conference

In March 2010, Catherine Lloyd-Bennett, WCB nurse based in Swansea, was delighted to be given the opportunity to attend the 16th International Conference on Cancer Nursing (ICCN) in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. The conference was organised by the International Society of Nurses in Cancer Care whose mission is ‘the protection and preservation of health and the relief of cancer related sickness, and the promotion and coordination of the activities of cancer nursing through the advancement and improvement of:

  • The delivery of nursing care to people affected by cancer
  • Education in cancer nursing
  • Nursing research, including the publication of the useful results of such research
Following the successful submission of an abstract for oral presentation titled “Making it Personal – Research Nurses, Tissue Banks and the Future of Cancer Treatment” Catherine travelled to Atlanta to represent the WCB and present the work of the project to her overseas-colleagues.  The conference was an excellent opportunity to learn from and share experiences with a variety of international cancer nurses, including tissue-bank nurses from Brazil and Canada. Her presentation was well-received and attracted much interest from all who attended. Catherine was honoured to represent the WCB within such a prestigious collaboration of nurses and describes the experience as the highlight of her career.

The vision of ISNCC is to be the voice of oncology nursing in the international arena.
The theme of the 16th ICCN was "Enhancing Knowledge, Promoting Quality" and the meeting attracted over 550 attendees, 22 exhibiting companies and organizations, and showcased the work of numerous experts in the field of cancer nursing.

This is the second time a WCB nurse has presented at an ICCN conference – the first being in Toronto in 2006.  The 17th International Conference on Cancer Nursing (ICCN) will be held in Prague from September 9 - 13th 2012 and the other WCB nurses are already starting to think of ideas to submit abstracts to follow in Cath’s footsteps.
