Suzanne Williams

My name is Suzanne Williams and I have been nursing for 25 years. I trained in Cardiff and worked on a bone marrow unit for a few years until I returned to Swansea in 1990 where I worked on a Haematology/Medical ward. I passed my Diploma in Nursing in 2003. I started my post as a Wales Cancer Bank Nurse for Swansea in September 2004. I have since passed my BSc in Cancer Care.

My present role consists of coordinating the Tissue Bank in Swansea where I liaise with surgeons, specialist nurses, pathologists and nursing staff to enable a smooth running of the Wales Cancer Bank. To date, in Swansea we collect 20 different cancer specialties between 2 hospitals within the same University Health Board.

I am now the Lead Nurse for the Cancer Bank and support other nurses in hospitals around Wales, with training and regular audits.  I recently did a nurse exchange with a fellow colleague who works for a Tissue Bank in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. I worked in Rio for a week learning about the different cultures and gave a presentation at a Bio Banking conference, this was an amazing experience, one that I have gained much knowledge from.

Janette Gwillim

I started my training in the late 70s in London, qualifying as a state registered nurse in 1981, not long after qualifying I moved to Essex where I worked in the local district hospital across a number of specialities.
It was 12 years before I eventually returned to Swansea, working at Singleton hospital within Ear nose and throat, /Oncology and subsequently Infection control, staying for over 7yrs.
I have in my many years nursing had a plethora of opportunities and posts though all working within the field of oncology, and direct patient care.

I started within the Wales Cancer Bank in 2005 seeing it as an opportunity to remain within Cancer care, but also be part of a dynamic new innovation within WAG supporting the health and long-term well being of the Welsh population.

Pam Hayward

Pam Hayward

I started nursing at the age of 39 in November 1986 as a mature student in Swansea.  My background has been mainly in Haematology.  I started in 1990 as a staff nurse on Ward 11 Haematology and General Medicine and was Ward Sister for Ward 11 until December 1999.  I then became the Clinical Nurse Specialist for Haemophilia and Anticoagulation until I retired at the end of March 2007.  I always said I would still like to work for two days a week so I came back a few weeks later and continued to run the Anticoagulation Clinics until they filled my post. Unfortunately I was diagnosed with breast cancer in November 2007 and was off sick having chemotherapy and radiotherapy.  I returned to work in September 2008 and joined the Wales Cancer Bank as a Research Nurse in November 2008.  I felt this was a really worthwhile organisation and I could empathize with patients as I have been through the cancer journey myself.
