Helping in the Drive to Combat COVID

28 May 2020

The Wales Cancer Bank (WCB) has recently issued serum samples to help in the development of a diagnostic test for COVID19. WCB requested ethical approval from Wales REC3 to be able to release samples for research not related to cancer, although still of benefit to cancer patients. This was approved and samples from 40 patients were identified from approximately 8,000 suitable samples. Only donations with more than one serum sample in the archive were chosen to ensure samples from those patients would still be available for cancer specific research in the future. The samples were collected pre virus and will be used as negative controls in the assay development.

The UKCRC Tissue Directory published a blog about the WCB’s involvement: https://biobankinguk.org/wales-cancer-bank-amends-ethics-to-support-covid-19-research/

The Wales Cancer Bank would like to repeat and emphasise our thanks to the patients in Wales for their contributions to the biobank and hope that all patients and their families are safe and well during this unsettling time.
